This class is an introduction to working with metal
clay, a malleable clay-like medium consisting of microscopic particles of fine
(0.999 pure) silver to make jewelry, or beads. Metal clay silver, (also
available in copper, bronze and steel) is mixed with water and a non-toxic
organic binder. It can be shaped, sculpted, carved or built into a hollow
form. It is then dried and fired in a kiln or with a hand held gas torch, to
burn off the binder. The resulting solid metal piece can be polished,
burnished and/or enhanced with various patinas.
The 3 hour class will meet on for four weeks. We will explore the basics of
rolling, forming, texturing, cutting, drying, creating a bail and firing, as
well as finishing techniques such as polishing, burnishing and applying a
patina. Students will have the opportunity to work with either copper, bronze
or silver to complete a pair of earrings, a unique pendant or beads. Students
will have access to using the teachers jewelry tools and students can buy the
metal clay from the teacher.

YOUTH CLASSES + Homeschool programs ********************** +++++++++++++++++++ *Multi-Cultural Masks & Giant Puppet Making TUESDAY 1-4pm AGES 5+ 6 Weeks- Starts April 5 No class April 19
In this class we view masks from around the
world and from many different cultures. From these masks, we discuss the
kinds of feelings that the masks represent and their possible uses in the
cultures. Were they used to tell a story? Were they used for
ceremonies or celebrations? We’ll take different materials such as clay,
paper-mache, plaster strips and cardboard to shape our own masks and find the
“story” that they tell. Each student has a chance to make a variety of
masks and decide if the mask will become a puppet and what size this puppet
might be. What story will the puppet tell? Come see and find out!

6 weeks:
Monday, March 14 -11am-2pm/ No Class April 18
Learning from the Masters and
the Other Great Artists……
This program
focuses on studio art and art history of the 20th century. It will be an
introduction to a selection of different artists and their individual styles.
We will be learning from the Masters and other great artists, by imitating
their techniques while exploring and creating our own techniques through the
process of making Art.
Each week we
will explore another artist, reflecting on the artist’s life and time and place
in Art History. We will look at traditional, abstract, and modern art. The
students will be able to identify an art form by its distinct style.
For inspiration
we’ll be looking at art books and discuss the art work we are viewing. We will
be using the Visual Strategy Theory to observe art by questioning and
understanding the choices the artist made. What do you think the artist was
thinking when he made this art work? We will be experimenting with artist
materials too.
Art mediums
like acrylic paints and canvas, gold leafing techniques, gouaches, wire, wood,
drawing with different tools, collage techniques, clay, and found objects.
